College of Science Advisory Board
The College of Science Advisory Board was established in 1999 to strengthen relationships and increase interaction between the College of Science and the community. Today the Advisory Board lends their expertise and support to the Dean, as well as, the faculty to ensure that UTEP's College of Science continues to respond to the changing needs of its students and constituents.

Mission/Vision
The Dean’s Advisory Board (AB) raises awareness, builds partnerships, and bolsters philanthropic support to advance the College by inspiring generosity and promoting student success. AB members lend their expertise and support to the Dean and faculty to ensure that UTEP’s College of Science continually responds to the evolving needs of students and constituents.
purpose
The AB is the principal advancement body for the College of Science. Its purpose is to advance and support the mission, goals, and values of the College through the following activities:
Member Responsibilities
Supporting
- Fundraising Participation: Engage in and support the College’s private fundraising efforts.
- Financial Contribution: Each member will contribute annually to an area of personal interest within the College of Science to the best of their financial ability, making the College a top philanthropic priority.
- Partnerships: Collaborate with the Dean and Director of Advancement to increase financial support for College programs, students, and faculty.
Advocating
- Advocacy: Act as advocates for the College within the profession and community.
- Cultivating Relationships: Meet with potential supporters individually or at special events to inspire interest and confidence among potential contributors.
- Spokesperson: Serve as persuasive and articulate spokespersons for the College’s interests in events, media, and meetings.
- Identifying Trends: Identify evolving business trends that require additional research efforts and recommend potential new courses and degree programs.
- Collaboration Opportunities: Identify opportunities for collaboration with the private sector, including internships, research opportunities, and initiatives that enhance faculty and student engagement in experiential learning.
participation
- Meeting Attendance: Commit to attending two meetings per year, either in-person or virtually, and notify the Dean or designee if there is a conflict.
- Engagement: Partake in meaningful, engaging, and respectful dialogue during council meetings.
- Annual Review: Review annual activities to pursue best practices and assist in identifying innovative ways to engage and thank donors.
College of Science Responsibilities Toward AB Members
Information
- Provision of Information: Provide the AB with current information regarding key challenges and opportunities facing the College and the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é.
Access
- Leadership Access: Ensure AB members have access to the College’s leadership, including faculty, program directors, and key administrators.
Opportunities to Engage
- Student Engagement: Provide opportunities for AB members to engage directly with students through participation in experiential learning programs, social settings, and other venues.
Opportunities to Provide Feedback
- Feedback Mechanisms: Regularly offer avenues for members to evaluate the effectiveness of the AB, their personal contribution, and the partnership between the College and the AB.
Membership - General Guidelines
AB members are selected based on their ability to represent, support, and influence a range of strategic, professional, and philanthropic interests. Key criteria include:
- Strong Support: Providing the College with strong, informed, and committed support aligned with the Dean’s priorities.
- Understanding Vision and Purpose: Clearly understanding the College’s vision and purpose and their role in supporting each.
- Informed Perspective: Maintaining an informed perspective on the needs, challenges, and opportunities shaping science education and the aspirations of incoming students.
- Respectful Relationships: Ensuring relationships between AB members and UTEP’s administration, faculty, staff, and other advisors are respectful and collegial.
Selection for Service on the DAC
- Appointment: The Dean is responsible for appointing members to the AB.
- Term Commitment: Candidates typically commit to a three-year term, with an option to renew by mutual agreement of the Dean and the member.
- Candidate Criteria: Ideal candidates demonstrate a commitment to advancing the College, can inspire or provide significant financial support, and possess expertise or influence that positions the College for greater success.
